Now, let’s go ahead and take a look at some healthy ways to navigate and deal with stress as it relates to being a first responder.
Take Time Off
Again, we respect the dedication and commitment to helping others and preserving the safety of our nation. Now, with that being said, it’s also important to take some time off here and there as it is needed. The dedication to being a first responder, while admirable, can quickly lead to a feeling of being overworked and highly stressed. Don’t forget to take some time for yourself or for your partner and kids, if applicable. It’s tempting to only focus on helping others, but it’s also healthy to invest some time and energy into yourself.
Enjoy a Hobby Or Something Else That’s Enjoyable
Personal development is important, and a first responder can lose sight of this in a position that’s focused around helping other people. Hobbies are a safe, healthy and fun way to shift the focus away from other people and potentially traumatic situations, focusing instead on relaxation and doing something for the sake of enjoyment. Whether it’s skiing, trying out a new recipe or learning a new card game, doing things for fun outside of the work environment is sure to add balance, meaning and serenity into your life.
Exercise: Good For the Body and Mind
Working out every other day or so – if you have the time and energy – is great for keeping up with the physical demands of your profession. Exercising regularly also helps people maintain a healthy weight, get better sleep, eat healthier portions, and increases the body’s level of endorphins. Increased endorphin production can result in mental health benefits like improved mood, decreased irritability, and even enhanced concentration. Really, exercising is almost always a worthwhile experience, and it’s especially useful as a first responder.
Eat Healthy Foods
Regardless of your profession or life situation, eating healthy is always a good idea. While you might have your fair share of meals interrupted by an emergency as a first responder, that doesn’t mean you need to skip the healthy stuff and load up on carbs, fat, and sugar. There are many healthy snacks out there to give you plenty of natural energy to get you through the day, as well as plenty of useful information online to help you make the right choices at the grocery store. Overall, drinking plenty of water (take a water bottle around with you at all times) and eating a balanced diet of whole grains, lean protein and fruits and vegetables will make you feel more energetic, support your immune system, and keep you feeling happy.
Consider Yoga Or Meditation
Activities that have you zone in and focus on your breathing and your body’s movements have been shown to help combat stress, anxiety, and depression. Activities like yoga and pilates are also a great way to stay in shape, strengthen your core, and keeping your muscles flexible and limber. Meditation also shows a lot of promise as a way to alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression by “quieting” the mind and allowing the individual to live in the present moment. Indeed, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, meditation is used as a technique to help with stress by nearly 10 percent of adults in the United States.
Journal Your Thoughts and Feelings
Oftentimes, we tend to bottle up our emotions without any healthy way to express and release them. This is not healthy. Journaling gives your mind an outlet to release pent-up thoughts and feelings, allowing you to navigate and sort through what’s going on in your life. By taking even five or ten minutes to jot down some of your thoughts and experiences, your brain will start to feel relieved, and you’ll be able to process what’s going on with a renewed sense of clarity.
